Hawaii quarantines farm where PEDv is discovered

The first case of porcine epidemic diarrhea virus was confirmed in Hawaii, on a farm in Waianae Valley on Oahu, says The Pig Site, and the state Agriculture Department has issued a guarantine order against movement of hogs on the west side of the island. The order also restricts movement of hogs from Oahu to neighbor islands. The farm had about 150 hogs. A quarter of them, mostly piglets, died from the disease last week. There are about 230 hog farms, mostly small operations, in Hawaii, including 70 on Oahu. PEDv was confirmed in the United States in May 2013 and has since been reported in 32 states. Some 8 million young pigs have died of the disease, says The Pig Site.
