In a bid to influence the new edition of the Dietary Guidelines, the meat industry launched a “Hands off my hotdog” petition at Change.org. “Hot dog, sausage, bacon and salami lovers throughout the land stand together as Americans in favor of a balanced diet that includes meat and poultry of all kinds,” is the opening sentence of the petition. The industry objects to a recommendation from a government-selected panel of experts that Americans eat more fruits, vegetables and whole grains and less meat and sugar. “We say, unequivocally and without hesitation, “Hands off my hot dog!”
What about the doughnut dog? “The ingredients are simple: a glazed donut bun, hot dog, lots of crispy bacon and raspberry jelly. But when all put together, it makes for one of the weirdest hot dogs you’ll ever feast your eyes on,” says the Sporting News. It will be sold by the Wilmington (Delaware) Blue Rocks, a minor league affiliate of the Kansas City Royals. The team is running a contest to name the creation.
