Green group says apple pesticide needs more safety work

The Environmental Working Group asked the government  to “launch a new investigation to determine whether the use of diphenylamine, or DPA, is safe for U.S. consumer,” said Food Safety News. DPA is applied to apples to limit storage damage. Food Safety News said an EWG letter to the Environmental Protection Agency said, “We urge EPA to halt the use of DPA on U.S. fruit until a rigorous analysis by EPA of the chemical can prove that it poses a reasonable certainty of no harm to consumers.”

EWG says Europe has banned DPA due to ‘”the possible presence on DPA-treated fruit of nitrosamines, a family of potent carcinogens.”
