The 2017 Alaska salmon catch could be twice as much as last year’s, with projections of 204 million fish compared to 122 million in 2016, says Alaska Dispatch News. “The total dockside value of the 2016 salmon fishery barely topped $406 million, the lowest in 14 years,” says ADN.
Sockeye salmon numbers are expected to be down this year, coming in at 44 million, which is lower than 2016 by about 12 million. But other salmon varieties will make up for the loss, with the pink salmon harvest, for instance, predicted to be 142 million fish — 103 million more than last year.
