Government sets strategy for re-seeding land burned by wildfires

The government announced its National Seed Strategy to restore federal lands damaged by wildfire, drought, severe storms and invasive species with “appropriate seeds to help grow plant life and pollinator habitat.” If possible, seeds for native species will be used, said the Interior and Agriculture departments, which oversee national parks, forests, grasslands and wildlife reserves. “Large disturbed areas must be replanted quickly to avoid severe erosion and colonization by non-native invasive plants,” said Steve Ellis, deputy director of the Bureau of Land Management. The seed strategy calls for a network of native-seed collectors, farmers who grow seed, and a network of nurseries and seed-storage facilities. Federal, state, local and private groups would cooperate in the work.
