Ralph Goodale, a frequent member of the cabinet when Liberals are in charge in Canada, is among the half-dozen likely candidates for agriculture minister, says Kelsey Johnson in Western Producer. The incoming prime minister, Justin Trudeau, will name his cabinet by next Wednesday. Besides Goodale, the only Liberal MP from Saskatchewan, the list of lawmakers with seniority and experience with agriculture policy includes Wayne Easter, a former president of a farm group, Denis Paradis, whose family owns a vineyard in Quebec, and Lawrence MacAuley, a former potato and dairy farmer from Prince Edward Island. “While agriculture is often overshadowed by more high-profile cabinet positions like finance, foreign affairs, justice and defence, replacing [outgoing Agriculture Minister Gerry] Ritz will be no easy task,” says Western Producer. Canada is perennially one of the top agricultural trade partners with the United States.
