From football field to community garden

After Paul Quinn College ended its football program, the historically black college in Dallas converted its football field into a massive organic garden. College president Michael Sorrell “decided that the college would grow its own food,” writes Amy McCarthy at Civil Eats. The We Over Me Farm “produces 30,000 pounds of food, has donated between 15-20 percent of the produce to local food charities, and has put the college on the map as an area food producer.” Hannah Koski, who oversees the operation, says production has nearly doubled since 2012. Nearly half of the produce is sold to the local community, and a portion of the farm is allocated to crops for local catering companies and restaurants.
