Former Vilsack adviser at USDA becomes Kaine’s chief of staff

Matt Paul, communications director for Tom Vilsack when he was governor of Iowa and later agriculture secretary, will work as the chief of staff for Democrat Tim Kaine as he campaigns for vice president, said the Des Moines Register. Paul helped engineer former secretary of state Hillary Clinton’s victory over Sen. Bernie Sanders in the Iowa caucuses in February.

The Register said Paul, 45, of Des Moines, has a long record in Iowa politics, “holding key roles in Vilsack’s 2002 gubernatorial campaign, Howard Dean’s 2004 presidential bid and former U.S. Sen. Tom Harkin’s 2008 campaign.”

Paul, state director for Clinton in Iowa, shifted to Clinton’s national campaign staff after the caucuses, said The Hagstrom Report.
