Food waste is global issue, not just a rich-nation problem

A report from the Waste and Resources Action Program says food waste is becoming a global problem with the expansion of middle-class consumers, says the New York Times. The report says one-third of all the food produced in the world is not consumed, and consumer food waste is expected to cost $600 billion annually by 2030. The discarded food exacerbates environmental problems, from the resources used to grow, process and deliver it to the greenhouse gases emitted when it decays in landfills. The WRAP report estimates the cost of food waste worldwide is $400 billion a year.
