Floods follow drought, threaten food crisis in Somalia

Parts of southern Somalia are being hit with floods, “aggravating the already alarming food security situation” cause for a lackluster rainy season, said the UN Food and Agriculture Organization. It says more than 1 million people are in urgent need of aid and an additional 2 million experience threats to their food security. Floods are reported along sections of the Shebelle and Juba rivers, the only perennial water flows in Somalia and the base for much of the country’s farm sector. FAO said it is assisting 210,000 people with cash-for-work programs, seeds for crops and livestock health programs. It seeks $49 million to reach an additional 350,000 people.
