Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack is due to arrive in Havana on Wednesday, leading the first official USDA visit to Cuba in half a century as part of the administration’s decision to normalize relations with the nation. “Food and agricultural goods are the dominant U.S. exports to Cuba and agriculture can serve as a bridge to foster cooperation, understanding and the exchange of ideas,” said Vilsack in a statement. Sen. Jeff Merkley of Oregon and Reps. Teri Sewell of Alabama, Suzan DelBene of Washington State and Kurt Schrader of Oregon — all Democrats — were to accompany Vilsack on the trip. The USDA said the group planned to meet Cuban government officials in agriculture, foreign affairs, and food purchasing, and to visit port facilities, markets and cooperatives.
