First female agriculture minister is appointed in Brazil

Katia Abreu, a former head of the largest farm lobbying group in Brazil, is the first woman to be appointed agriculture minister of the world’s largest coffee, sugar and beef exporter, says Bloomberg. A senator since 2006, “she has been an outspoken defender of agriculture and large-scale farms, putting her at odds with indigenous communities and landless worker movements,” says the news agency. “She will be need to find the balance between supporting farmers suffering from low grain prices and a Brazilian government planning to reduce spending.”
