FDA to reconsider labeling rule for honey and maple syrup

Maine Rep. Chellie Pingree said the FDA will take a second look at its plan for identifying the naturally occurring sugar in pure honey and maple syrup. The agency had proposed listing both as “added sugars” on the updated Nutrition Facts label, an approach that was criticized by businesses and officials in New England as wrong-headed and misleading.

In a letter to Pingree, the FDA said that public comments showed its proposal “does not provide the clarity that the agency intended. … FDA looks forward to working with stakeholders to devise a sensible solution.”

“FDA has not yet released a new proposal,” said Pingree’s office. As a member of the House Appropriations Committee, she helped include a rider in the fiscal 2018 USDA-FDA funding bill to prevent the FDA from requiring naturally occurring sugars to be listed as “added sugars.”
