Hampton Creek, maker of a vegan mayonnaise, says it will get to keep the “Just Mayo” name in an agreement with the FDA, which originally said the name was misleading. Mayonnaise traditionally is a creamy sauce made with egg yolks, oil, vinegar and seasonings. Hampton Creek says it will change the label to say the product is not made with eggs and will emphasize the sense of just that means “guided by reason, justice and fairness,” says Quartz.
The commercial success of “Just Mayo” worried the egg indusry. The producer-funded American Egg Board tried to get Whole Foods to drop the product. Food Navigator reported in October that USDA was conducting an administrative review of the Egg Board’s activities. Utah Sen Mike Lee has asked if the board, created to promote eggs, abused its power. USDA told Food Navigator that it “does not condone any efforts to limit competing products in commerce.”
