Farmer support for Trump continues to decline, new poll says

More than a third of farmers view President Trump less favorably than they did before the current trade war, according to a new poll by Farm Journal. The survey, which asked 2,300 farmers for their views on the president, found that only a slim majority of those who supported Trump in the election would vote for him again. The poll found even lower support for President Trump than another recent poll, by Farm Futures, which pegged his support among farmers at 60 percent.

According to Farm Journal data collected during the week of Aug. 6, just 56 percent of farmers who voted for Trump in 2016 would do so again. Fifty-two percent said they view him “favorably,” 41 percent view him “unfavorably,” and 5 percent had no opinion. Additionally, 35 percent view Trump “less favorably” than they did before he started a trade war with several of the United States’ key agricultural trade partners.

Farmers’ views were split by age group, with 61 percent of farmers under 45 years old favoring Trump, versus just 40 percent of farmers over 65 years old. The majority of younger farmers said they would vote for President Trump again, according to the poll, but only 43 percent of those over 65 would do so.
