The European Union hopes to enlist American cities and states to lower greenhouse gas emissions, now that President Trump has pulled the U.S. out of the Paris climate treaty, Reuters reports.
“I’m quite optimistic when I see the reaction from the states, from the cities, from the mayors, from all important U.S. companies, that they will still push for an active fight against climate change,” EU Commission Vice President Maros Sefcovic told Reuters.
Later this year, Sefcovic said the EU will organize a meeting of mayors from around the world, chaired by Michael Bloomberg, the former New York mayor and current UN special envoy for climate change and cities.
