A proposal to give EU nations the power to restrict or ban GMO food and feeds that are approved by the EU overall has been opposed by the Environment Committee of the European Parliament, said World-Grain. “EU members are concerned that the proposal might prove unworkable and lead to reintroduction of border controls between pro and anti-GMO countries,” the article states.
Committee chair Giovanni La Via said “member states should shoulder their responsibilities and take a decision together at EU level, instead of introducing national bans.” The proposal on the sale or use of GMO food and feed would mirror existing authority for EU members to block or restrict cultivation of GMO crops even if they are approved by the 28-nations bloc. The committee recommendation is expected to go to a floor vote during a meeting of Parliament on Oct 26-29.
