The EU voted to block two kinds of GMO crops, but weren’t able to get the “qualified majority” required to completely ban them. Instead, the vote has been kicked to the European Commission’s executive, President Jean-Claude Juncker, says Reuters.
“EU governments were asked to vote on the future of two grades of GM maize, Pioneer’s 1507 and Syngenta’s Bt11, which kill insects by producing their own pesticide and are also resistant to a particular herbicide,” says Reuters.
But there weren’t enough votes to be conclusive. Likewise, when the commission countries were asked to vote on whether to extend a sales license for a type of insect-resistant corn engineered by Monsanto, most countries voted against relicensing, but lacked enough votes to make the decision final.
