Enviros sue Canada over export of GE salmon eggs

Environmental groups went to court in Canada in a bid to block a government-approved plan to produce genetically engineered salmon eggs in Canada for shipment to Panama, where they would grow into fish, says the Guardian. The company involved in the operation, AquaBounty Technologies, has sought U.S. approval of its GE salmon since 1995. AquaBounty says the lawsuit is without merit. The environmental groups say Canadian regulators erred in approving production of the salmon eggs on Prince Edward Island. “We think the measures to avoid mixing with the wild Atlantic salmon are inadequate and once there is genetic contamination the wild salmon is forever changed,” said Ecology Action Centre. Living Oceans Society joined in bringing the suit.
