Ebola safeguards may disrupt cocoa harvest

The ebola outbreak in western Africa could disrupt the cocoa harvest in two of the world’s largest growers of the crop that yields chocolate and affect prices, says Politico. Ivory Coast, which grows a third of the world’s cocoa, has closed its border with Liberia and Guinea, two countries with more than 3,200 deaths caused by ebola, “putting a major crimp on the workforce needed to pick the beans…just as the harvest begins,” it says. To the east of Liberia is Ghana, which grows 18 percent of the cocoa crop. Politico says the World Cocoa Foundation is expected to announce on Wednesday a fund to help pay the costs of halting the spread of ebola.
