“Four of the world’s most destructive agricultural pests are actually one and the same fruit fly,” says the UN Food and Agriculture Organization. It says the discovery, the result of work by four dozen researchers in 20 countries, should boost efforts to control the harmful insects. The Oriental, Philippine, invasive and Asian Papaya fruit flies all belong to the same species, Bactrocera dorsalis, said the researchers. The pest causes “incalculable” damage in Asia, Africa, the Pacific and parts of South America, said FAO. “The findings of the study will also simplify techniques like the use of sterilized males to prevent the growth of pest populations.”
