Cornell will monitor crops with a drone

Two crop specialists for Cornell Cooperative Extension have federal approval for an experiment of monitoring crops with a drone equipped with visual, thermal and multi-spectral cameras, says the Finger Lakes Times in Geneva, New York. “If a recently initiated project goes as planned, (crop specialist Bill) Verbeten may be spending much less time in the field and more time piloting a drone aircraft that will do the work for him,” says the paper. Verbeten says the goal is to see if drones are a time-saver for growers. The drone is being used this fall in training flights in Genessee County and there are hopes of using it in 10 counties in 2015.
