The upcoming edition of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, due later this year, could propose “real limits on sugar,” says an Associated Press story that lists “five things to watch for as the government begins writing the new guidelines.” AP writer Mary Clare Jalonick says the panel of experts advising USDA and HHS leans toward lower consumption of sugar and salt. Its recommendations could set a target calories from sugar added to food during processing. There also could be language on coffee consumption by pregnant women.
Controversy already is swirling over potential recommendations on red meat and the environmental impact of dietary choices. The meat industry says the expert panel might suggest eating less red meat and processed meat. Lawmakers have signaled opposition to linking dietary advice with access to food by future generations, says AP.
