Campaign for immigration reform aims for action in 2017

The “Reason for Reform” campaign launched by proponents of comprehensive immigration reform is trying to persuade Republican lawmakers to support an overhaul in 2017 with the argument that the U.S. economy would benefit, says Politico. The campaign, backed by a group led by former New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg, underscores that “reform — should it occur next year — will be a fiercely contested legislative fight.”

“It also indicates the level of optimism among advocacy groups pushing for immigration reform that a new president and Congress can make headway on the issue — despite significant rifts between the two parties on immigration that’s reflected in each of the presidential nominees, as well as a deeply divided Capitol Hill,” said Politico. The new campaign “is yet another effort to nudge House Republicans along.”

Farm groups are part of the drive for immigration reform to assure a stable and legal workforce. More than half of farmworkers are undocumented, according to estimates.

Republicans are expected to keep control of the House in the Nov. 8 elections, although Democrats may gain some seats. New York Sen. Chuck Schumer has vowed to take up immigration if Democrats take control of the Senate and he is elected majority leader. Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton says she would “build a path to citizenship for millions of immigrants who are already contributing to our economy.” Republican nominee Donald Trump says he would deport millions of undocumented immigrants.
