Congressional efforts to provide drought relief to California farmers are dead for this year, according to Sen Dianne Feinstein, says the Associated Press. It quotes Feinstein, one of the lead lawmakers on the issue, as saying “it has become clear that we will be unable to present an agreed-upon proposal.” The House passed a bill to roll back environmental rules so more water could be diverted to the Central Valley. The Senate passed a bill that calls on federal agencies to pump as much water as possible within the bounds of current law, says AP. In the past few days, environmental groups complained a secret deal was being worked out.
