At least one soybean exporter in Brazil has agreed to collect royalties for Monsanto, the giant seed company, from growers who plant biotech seeds that contain Monsanto’s traits, said Reuters, citing industry sources. The story said the company declined to be named. Bigger exporters, such as ADM and Bunge, would reach similar agreements soon, the sources told Reuters. The agreements would end the risk of a disruption in exports. Brazil is the second-largest soybean exporter. In the United States, growers pay a royalty as part of the purchase price of genetically engineered soybean seed. In Brazil, where GE seeds were not legal before 2005, it is common for growers to save seed from each crop and use it for the next planting season.
