Bloomberg steps in after Trump backs out of climate treaty

After President Trump withdrew U.S. participation in the Paris climate treaty, former New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg pledged $15 million to help developing countries meet their goals under the agreement, says NPR.

“Americans will honor and fulfill the Paris Agreement by leading from the bottom up — and there isn’t anything Washington can do to stop us,” said Bloomberg, who now acts as the U.N.’s special envoy on climate change and cities.

Under former President Obama, the U.S. had already contributed $1 billion to the Green Climate Fund, meant to assist developing countries in lowering their emissions according to the Paris treaty. Obama had promised $2 billion more, but none of that money is expected under the Trump administration.

Boomberg’s charitable organization — Bloomberg Philanthropies — is calling on other cities and government leaders to donate money and muscle in order to meet the climate accord’s standards.
