Bange retires after 20 years as USDA world-board chairman

Jerry Bange, overseer of USDA’s monthly supply/demand report, will retire on May 31 after 20 years as chairman of the World Agricultural Outlook Board, USDA announced. Bange has worked at the Agriculture Department for 43 years, starting in 1971, before he got his doctorate from the University of Maryland. The supply/demand report is issued at the same time as USDA’s well-known crop report and is closely followed for its assessment of major crops around the world and explanation of key factors that affect the supply.

USDA will advertise for a new chair for the “world board,” a key job with low public profile, and move as expeditiously as possible to fill the post. Senior economist Seth Meyer was named acting chair.
