Alberta farm had two of Canada’s mad cow cases

Canada’s latest case of mad cow disease, reported on Feb. 13, was born on the same farm in Alberta as an animal afflicted with the brain-wasting disease in 2010, says the Canadian Food Inspection Agency. Broadcaster CBC reports that the CFIA “said this was the first time a single farm has had two cases.” As a consequence, the CFIA says it was trying to track all the cattle born on the farm in the years between the two cases, and that may have been exposed to the same feed. “As you can see, the scope of this investigation is broad,” says a CFIA official. “It will take time.”

The new case was the first in four years. China joined several other nations at the end of last week in restricting imports of beef products from Canada. South Korea, Taiwan, Peru and Belarus also have imposed limits.
