Advisory panel named for Dietary Guidelines update

The Biden administration appointed 20 food and nutrition experts on Thursday to help overhaul the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, which provide food-based recommendations to prevent diet-related chronic diseases. The 2025 edition will be the 10th version of the guidelines, which are updated every five years.

On Feb. 10, committee members are scheduled to hold the first of six online meetings open to the public. The agenda for the first meeting includes an overview of scientific questions, selected by the departments of Agriculture and Health and Human Services, for examination by the committee. The departments collaborate in writing the guidelines.

Panelists will use a “health equity lens” so that such factors as socioeconomic status, race, ethnicity, and culture are taken into account in their work, said an HHS-USDA release.

“The recent White House Conference on Hunger, Nutrition, and Health underscored the need to understand the science of nutrition and the role that social structures play when it comes to people eating healthy food,” said Xavier Becerra, HHS secretary.
