For the last two summers, the sailboat Ceres has traveled the Hudson River, “carrying all manner of small-scale, artisanal farm products to eager consumers in New York City and at river towns along the way,” writes Antonio Roman-Alcala at Civil Eats. Ceres carries about $50,000 of goods at a time, has visited about 20 locations, and sells out its stock or comes close to it on each trip. The Vermont Sail Freight Project is backed by a foundation but its organizers hope it will become a profit-making enterprise. There are a handful of similar projects in North America. The Civil Eats item includes a 3-minute video about the project.
