A primary election olio in three parts

1. North Carolina Rep Renee Ellmers won the Republican nomination for a third term on Tuesday in “the one House race where immigration matters,” as Politico phrased it. Ellmers, with Tea Party roots, is one of a few Republicans to support legalization of undocumented workers. She beat her opponent, economic commentator Frank Roche, by a 3-to-2 margin, says the State Board of Elections Web site.

In the Democratic primary, “American Idol” runner-up Clay Aiken claimed victory with a 400-vote margin, said the Raleigh News & Observer.

2. Second-term Rep Scott DesJarlais, Tennessee Republican and a member of the House Agriculture Committee, is on Roll Call’s list of 10 most vulnerable members. State Sen Jim Tracy has raised four times as much money as DesJarlais ahead of the Aug 7 primary election.

3. House Speaker Boehner rolled to an easy victory over a Tea Party challenger in his Ohio district, said Roll Call. It says victory in the Republican primary is a virtual guarantee of election in the GOP-leaning district.
