A good tomato crop for California growers with water

Harvest of fresh-market and processing tomatoes is under way in northern California with summer conditions favoring a good crop for growers who have access to enough water, says Capital Press, citing interviews with farmers. California leads the nation in fresh-market tonnage. Tomato processors anticipate contracts for 14.3 million tons this year, up 2 percent from production in 2014. “As with fresh-market tomatoes, much of processing-tomato growers’ success will hinge on the performance of wells for those who don’t have much surface water,” said Capital Press. Processors had record production last year.
